Make the most of a bad situation, I say. Back in the day before I learned to save every 3 minutes, I would sometimes work for hours without saving. On many occasions I would inevitably lose some work as a result of my laziness. One file got corrupted somehow during the crash and when I went to reopen the file, what I saw is this image. I was devastated at the time but refused to waste the opportunity to recover something from the experience. I saved the file as a JPG and it ended up being the background of several other pieces of… art.
I needed a good metallic texture for a project. A few linear passes over a nice smooth piece of aluminum with my die grinder gave it an interesting directional grind texture. One of the shots worked great for a repeating pattern, and here it is.
Some of these were sketched and scanned for various projects, some were created digitally, but they are all vector graphics now.
I have tons of this stuff, which will be posted when I have a minute to myself.
We spent an entire afternoon walking around the Military Museum in Sofia, Bulgaria a couple years ago. I thought it would get boring after a few minutes, but I shot over 2000 photos just on the textures of the machinery! The rusty old military equipment was one of the best parts of the Bulgaria trip.
